Does anyone know when the gas hole location was changed on the carbine bolts ? my bolt has the gas port farther away from the face of the bolt.The SN on my 1896 indicates it was made in August of 1897.

Frank Mallory in his book, "The Krag Rifle Story", (second edition, page 210), reported - "Gas escape hole (b) moved 0.25" rearward: late 1895 or early 1896 (36000)"
FWIW - Krag Serial number 36000 should date from around July, 1896.
Your bolt should be 'correct'.
