Correct magazine for a 1960's / 1970's British used M16?

Hi,

I've just acquired an example of the British SAS issue M16 magazine pouch:

Infantry Equipment, Pattern 1958

It's to go with my SAS webbing collection:

It would be nice to get a contemporary magazine or two to go with it. I know very little about the M16 series of rifles, so could anyone tell me what I should be looking for if I want a magazine of the sort that would have been supplied to the UK along with the rifles circa the 1960's / 1970's?

Should be the Colt mags, and I should think any of the 20's would work.

How many mag.s dose the pouch hold ?? How many do you need. ??

It held x4 20 round magazines.

They don't seem to be difficult to find in the UK. Are the ones marked 'COLT AR-15' on the baseplate correct for this period?

The early magazines were marked AR-15, first had the small "CAL. .223" in 1964Attachment 86234

Yes...

I would imagine the twenty round magazines from Colt would have been appropriate as the magazines would have been part of the rifle sales package to the UK. It quite possible that other 20 rounders or 30 rounders "found" and "borrowed" their way into the UK system via the many joint NATO exercises that took place.
