It's interesting to note the 116th Infantry Regiment (Virginia National Guard), 29th Infantry Division had M1 Garands in 1939.
SRS records show that the USMC tested alot of four digit gas traps M1 rifles plus the promotion of the Johnson rifle and their reluctance to part with the M1903
keep the M1 rifles from being issued to them
RCS is right, the Corps didn't want to give up their '03s for the new-fangled and untrustworthy self-loaders. When they finally did, they said everybody except the infantry divisions because the sand in an amphibious invasion would gum them up. Oy vey.
