I was offered a No 4 Mk1. In trade, it is a BSA that was ftr'd in 1946. Would that roughly mean it is WW2 manufacture or should I stay away because it has no date on it according to the guy?

The original manufacture date should be present on the left side of the butt socket under the safety. Many later wartime BSA rifles had light engraving and if it went through FTR, those markings may have been lost in the blasting process prior to the metal being phosphated and painted/baked with Suncorite. Look real hard and maybe you'll be able to see it.
Also, if you can tell us the serial number - including any letter prefix - it may be possible to tell you approximately when it was made.
Thanks guys, I am waiting for the guy to email me back I will let you know what he sends
