I always understood it was for the BAR, but only the WW1 model without the bipod would have fitted.
That would explain rarity, they would all have gone to the mud of France. Ballou shows two in his book, "Rock in a Hard Place" and the WW1 is slightly different to no surprise. The WW2 model is much bigger...bipod would require that.
