I have a sporterized 1889 with the stock cut back to the missle of the first barrel band, so no band can be attached as it sits. No upper wood out there either. The barrel seems well fit to the stock, but I wonder if it is safe to shoot.

Barrel bands hold the rifle's fore end woodwork to the action and barrel. The fore end is there to provide gripping surface for the shooter, and aesthetics, ie to make the rifle look good. It should be safe to shoot, depending on the rest of the rifle being in shooting condition.

Biggest thing is using the proper ammo. The 1889 doesn't use standard 7.5x55 Swiss and needs to use downloaded ammo. Just making sure your aware as it could have some pretty bad results otherwise.
My shows the GP 90/03 loaded with a paper patch lead hollow based heeled steel capped bullet. This was the original load for the early 1889 rifle
second cartridge is the GP 90/23 loaded with FMJ and round nose bullet for the improved Schmidt-Rubin rifles and not for the M1889Attachment 118022Attachment 118023

The 90/23 round was made for the M-89 to correct the over pressure problems caused by the original GP-90 ammo . The 90/23 allowed people that still had the older M-89 rifle to still shoot it .
Guys - thanks for all the updates on the ammo, especially the link to the ammo page.
This 1889 is s/n 98906 built in 1892, so the older GP90 and 90/03 looks like the right ammo.
It looks in great shape, all matching numbers (rear sight is marked 88906 ?) - sadly, it was sported and someone ground the curve off of the top of the rear sight.....
