Late calibers should all be stamped, bent sheet metal. The milled were all early. Unless you can find someone in the US making milled receiver blanks... No it wouldn't matter for assembly I think, they'll function fine.
Just be sure you have access to plenty of magazines for which one of the 22 caliber rounds you decide on. The magazines for 5.56 would be harder to find then those for the 5.45 Russian as there are numbers of places who sell the magazines for the AK-74.
Thanks for the information. I thought about 5.45 but I realize how much harder it is to get than 5.56. I am currently on vacation in Utah so I was unable to reply. I am trying to get into aks and the two I have been looking at are the sa93 and the Sam-5. I like both but with the sam-5 I could use it for prairie dogs.yes I do realize the ar is better for hunting but that is so lame.I hear the Sam-5 has very good accuracy for an ak .the Sam-5 can cost anywhere from 1000-2000 so that’s a little bit of a problem and I also hear that only 500 or so were imported. The sa93 I have heard is a wonderful 7.62x39 platform for the ak and they are more plentiful. The only thing I have that is remotely close to an ak is a csa vz58 and I love it.
Getting 5.45 x39 ammo is not hard. Wolf has it on a steady basis now. But if you go with the 5.56 instead then finding magazines very well could be a problem. Many of those made do not function well.
Yes your right but I like that I have more options with 5.56 ammo and I have heard that mags are the main problem with the 556 ak.
Not inherently true... Both Poland and Bulgaria still make 5.56 AK mags. The only one making military quality 5.45 mags is Russia and they’re not exporting. Magpul makes 5.45 mags but I’ve never seen any in the wild. If all you want is a range mage the Tapco mags work well enough.

The only reason milled receivers were ever a thing was cuz Russia wasn’t technologically advanced enough in the beginning to produce good stamped receivers. Some will tell you the milled rifles are more accurate but I haven’t found that to be generally true.
That said, I think Arsenal makes a milled 5.45 AK.

The Arsenal SA-M5 is very nice, and now very cost prohibitive these days. It is a similar varient of those used in Columbia.
I hope you find one.
Arsenal makes a good AK in 5.56 called the slr-106 , and those are still pretty easy to get ahold of from my understanding. They are made using Bulgarian parts. Circle 10(Bulgarian) also makes a great 556 magazine. There is no difference in accuracy whether using a milled or stamped receiver. I own both variations and I can personally tell you there is no difference from one to the other except in weight. The milled receiver feels sturdier, but as long as the stamped variant is made to mil-spec, you won't have any problems. Just try to stick with combloc examples, American companies making ak's still haven't gotten all the bugs worked out yet, mostly metallurgy issues.I have an american-made c39 V2 that has a milled receiver and it is eating itself alive from the inside because the metal is soft in the front trunnion and unfortunately on the bolt itself, I have to check the headspace on the thing literally every time before a range trip. Even though the c39 V2 shoots a 7.62 x 39, it still should not be disintegrating on a milled receiver. Weather you end up getting a milled receiver or a stamp variant, just go with one of the combloc rifles and you should be okay
