I took possession today of a 1945 Sako M39’s. It’s a beautiful rifle with almost 100% bluing. The only problem is that stock is completely dry. It appears to be sanded, but dry with no finish on the wood. Anyone know what the original finish used was? Or barring that, what a good similar option would be? Any suggestions?
You caught me a bit flat footed but it is a bit unconventional. Pine tar of some description and someone makes a reasonable facsimile that is not coming to mind. I will check back with the answer if someone does not beat me to it.
Here it is. I have not tried it but do remember doing some research for a project and it was highly recommended.
Would love to see some before and after photos. Just picked up a Sako. It was so pretty I missed the fact someone had "snipered" the bolt. Ouch.

I used swedish Imprex pine tar finish. I used the "light" blend, it works great on Finn and furniture. Imprex is the blended thin tar and oil. Akta tratja is just raw pine tar boiled and smells like a boat dock.
I think the rifles were issued to be finished by the soldiers...I have had two unissued M39's and both were dry. I think the soldier was expected to rub finish into it over time...Much like boot camp here in the US used to be...
