No 4 restoration question.

Hi all,
Here is a before and after pic of my latest project. A restoration of a fairly un-exciting sporter No4 made in October 1943 at ROF Fazakerley. Interestingly, it did not have the "Surrey" stamp I've come to expect in these British sporterized No4s imported to Canada. I guess it was a DIY job.

I had a lot of difficulty getting the pins for the forearm nosecap right and it may not be as close a fit as is required. The result seems to be a tight barrel/wood fit. The barrel has the correct downward pressure at the end, but no movement up is possible due to the close fit of the upper forward wood. Is this a problem that needs fixing? (I've not taken it to the range yet to see if it shoots OK)

Looks lovely, nice job.

The barrel needs to float and you don't want the top wood clamping the barrel.

Plenty of material on here regarding setting up.

Perhaps try a few rounds through it at the range and see how she shoots?

Thanks to a lot of BLO applications. And I mean a lot...

Think its around 5-6 lbs up lift at the front of the barrel I.E it takes that amount of force to move the barrel up from the last 1 1/2 - 2" of bottom wood at the fore end.

Only because I have the reference sitting in the shelf behind me, the uplift for a No 4 at the fore-end bedding collar should be in the range of 3-5lb. Not trying to be a pedant, only offering BurtonP the detail he may not have. :thup:

I was running from memory because my stuff is about 7 feet behind me and I waz to slack to get up and find it actually Wadhams book is 3 feet away to my left Gads! I originally put 4-5 anyway alls good bloke:thup:.

My No.4 that is my shooter has no uplift at all whilst the other has the regulation uplift maybe it likes the hand loads better don't know but there really is not much in it between them if I do my bit.....:bow:

Thanks chaps, the up pressure on the barrel at the forend tip is OK, but it is just pinched by the top wood. I'm going to have to get the chisel and reamer out to give it space to move I guess.
