correct bayonet
Hello,
my dad happens to own a Long Branch No4 MkI* rifle. the rifle is in rather good shape, looks as if the buttstock has been left in a bucket of oil or something because its darker then the front area, but that doesnt really matter.
parts are all matching.
What I really want to know is, which bayonet goes with this rifle? I bought a spike bayonet at some army surplus a while ago. its marked:
NO. 4 MKII and under it its written 5 or maybe an S, not sure.

Did the rifles have a certain bayonet model? matching name? new to this, im still fairly ignorant.
no pictures of the rifle, its locked away...:runaway:

Thats the right bayonet, but if his rifle is a LongBranch (correct manufacture is actually Small Arms Ltd, or SAL), then a Long Branch bayonet would be the ticket. The squarish S on your bayonet denotes Stevens/Savage manufacture in the US. A LongBranch made bayonet would have a little superimposed LB marking. It is also possible to find post war LongBranch bayonets with the superimposed CA mark for Cdn Arsenals.
Don't be fooled by the mkII designation on the bayonet you show. This is the second version of the #4 bayonet, but was intended for both the #4mk1 and the #4mk1*. The mark 1 version of the bayonet had the cruciform blade.

Thank you for the quick response.
I'll be on the look out for one marked with an LB.
