Would like to mount a scope on an Arisaka Model 38. The bolt has been turned down and the rifle sporterized. I think it may have had a side mount scope mount on it at one time due to holes on the left side of the breech. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum, got pics? Hard to say exactly what mount was used, perhaps since it's already been done you can find the top blocks for it and then use conventional rings. You could fill the side holes.
If you are happy with weaver bases the #1 side mount and the #70 top mount (one piece) should fit your T-38.

Have any idea what length bolts I could use?
All mounts should come with screws.
Are you sure its a type 38 and not a type 97? The do look similar.
The type 97 was their sniper rifle and the scope mount was on the left side of the receiver.
Like mentioned by Jim in post #2 pics would really help out.

Yes you can put a scope on it. I would discuss it with your gunsmith. They usually drill and tap the receiver for a Weaver base and mount it on. You then put the scope on that. But the gunsmith may have a collection of scope mounts he could use, so you could pick one from the pile.
Many people put scopes on Japanese rifles over the years, so it is quite doable.
