M1 Garand / CMP Stock Question

A question crossed my mind the other day and I just wanted to get the group's thoughts on the matter.

Would the CMP distribute an M1 with a forged inspection-stamped, "original" stock or is everything they send out authenticated?

I understand that if it comes from an individual and not directly from the CMP, the stock could have been changed after receipt from the CMP (with papers) but before being sold again.....i'm more curious about if the CMP would distribute forged stocks (knowingly or unknowingly).

I think the stocks the CMP puts on rifles are all pretty much contained in house, so there would be no way for fake stamps to be placed on the stocks they use. If they don't have a suitable USGI stock, they use one of their own, which has their "CMP" stamp on it, so there is no question of the origin. So, if you are buying directly from the CMP, I'd say there is no worry about anything being faked.

Once the CMP sells a rifle, then who knows. You could easily buy a "CMP" rifle in which the original or subsequent owner changed the stock, and then all bets are off, even if it still carries the CMP certificate.

I doubt it, if the CMP needs to change the stock the replace it with one of their own and those tend to have the CMP stamp

A commercial fake can't get into the CMP system, they don't buy rifles outside the Army.

Some rifles are donated from private collections etc to CMP. It is possible a fake could get in the system but not probable.

I was told by an employee once that they caught people cherry picking parts and returning rifles because they did not function correctly or did not meet grade requirements. While doubtful, a stock could have been swapped in this manner too. Someone could have humped up a VFW/Legion garand and it was subsequently returned to CMP. Unless a rifle is sold as a correct or better grade, I assume the graders do not care what kind of wood or cartouche is on the rifle as long as it is functional. I'm sure that some of the people that post on the CMP forum indicating they clean and repair VFW/Legion rifles cherry pick and swap out parts to make them functional.

Sometimes in gunshops people will request part swaps.

"Hey for an extra $50 can you take that rear sight and put it on this one?"

Same with stocks. "Why does that have a CMP tag but a beat to hell stock?" "Last guy wanted it"

The CMP does this as well, I just happened. A friend was at the CMP and bought a rifle, He didn't like the stamped trigger guard so they swapped it out the whole trigger group with one that had milled trigger group. He didn't like the new CMP stock so they swapped it out was a SA NRF stock, the rifle is a Winchester.
