I mate of mine uses an old prescription about 5 (I think) below the standard one for his every day glasses...... he doesn't do more than 25m in most disciplines
I use a cheap pair of glasses (1.25X) costing £1 and I black out the right lens with a strip of black tape with a pinhole in it. It works perfectly at all distances. The trick is to get the pinhole in line with your line of sight.
Up to trying that I couldn't focus on the backsight, front sight and target on any of my rifles with a barrel mounted sight.
