D4 Guns - Hello Milsurps!
Hi Everyone,
Let me introduce myself. My name is John Dunlap and I've been collecting firearms for about 15 years. My passion for military surplus rifles took me down the path of creating a business around them where I buy and sell collector firearms. I am an FFL since 2013 and around that time I started D4 Guns (d4guns.com). It's been a fun and rewarding business so far. Perhaps some of you have bought firearms from me on Gunbroker (handle is d4guns). I have an inventory of about
I'm hoping to continue my learning/education of military surplus firearms and contribute to your forum. I hope that I am welcome.

Looking for info on the circa 1909 Peddie Calichiopulo sight system
Attachment 97767
Background:
I ran across this [hopefully attached] second page of an article from a 1909 issue of Engineering [located on the HathiTrust website] and wondered if anyone had ever seen an example of the Calichiopulo aperture front sight.
Apparently, Peddie [a Canadian] and Antonio Calichiopulo [an Italian artillery officer] entered into some sort of collaboration and developed a sight system incorporating Peddie's rear sight and Calichiopulo's front sight; according to the info I found, these were tested by the British military, though not adopted.
Around 1911 Peddie obtained a GB patent and a few years later a US patent on an aperture front sight along the lines of the Calichiopulo sight, and Vickers Maxin got involved somehow. In about 1915 an aperture front sight was marketed by Marble's in the US as the V-M [Vickers-Maxim] sight and it enjoyed some early popularity but developed a reputation for fragility over time; this was due to the inclusion in the V-M of a 'Pope's Island Gold' insert included to present a brass-like face to the shooter for ready sight acquisition. In use the 'Gold', a cast jewelry metal not only proved brittle itself but required the outer steel tube to be too thin to resist damage.
The original Calichiopulo sight, being solid steel with no insert, appears to be quite robust.
I have found no further information on Calichiopulo nor his sight. Can anyone provide further?
