Sorry, shouldn't have picked on 'ya. I figured he'd already had it apart and maybe the guys who told him the sight would have to come off first, just meant if he wanted the hand guard completely free of the barreled action.
I just figured if you couldn't lift the action (with hand guard) out with the barrel band slid forward, you could remove the recoil plate screw and it would all lift out with the hand guard still on it. I thought maybe they had already seen it marked "Rock-Ola" on the gas cylinder.
Maybe I'm "losing it," but figured it would still come apart along with the hand guard. Now, I'll have to try one tomorrow. The weather man here has us down for a big "snow event" starting on Thursday.
He's been telling us that every week since about Christmas! Don't have anywhere I need to go, so not too worried about it. - Bob
My father was a highly skilled tool maker and this sight arrangement has all the hall marks of the tool makers craft.
I still have my dad's tool chest with dozens of engineering gauges he made himself over the years.
As a side note....
In the early 1960's, the telecommunications company he worked for at the time lost a big contract to a competitor, pictures were 'obtained' of this rather complicated piece of equipment and my dad led a team of engineers secretly reverse engineering and bench testing it from the pictures alone!
Now that's an engineer!
I put together a Carbine with a shortened barrel (barrel probably came from a sporterized Carbine) and reshaped it to take the standard front sight. The slot just took some time. I probably shaped the key to fit instead of making the slot perfect. I remember using a large flat file to shape the barrel end. Don't remember anything else.
