I took the sling off and measured it. It's 70" long and it is spliced.
There was a name hand written on it that is hard to read, but could be Woodman.
Take a look at my trapdoor sling. Does that...
One question I have is there is no provision for a cleaning rod on my rifle. The front barrel band does have the recess for it, but the wood does not, just the bayonet lug. Does this look right?...
Last pictures.
A few more pictures.
I recently picked up this really fantastic condition 1890 Berthier carbine. The gentleman I got it from, got it from a family friend who brought it back from WWII. I really don't know the details of...
Thanks for replies. And thanks br, very interesting information.
Do others think the sling is right time period??
The bore is excellent.
The only mark I see on the stock is a small "2" right behind the trigger guard.
Last five.
Here are a few more pictures.
I've had this early Krag for a while and would like to know a little more about it.
It's serial # 8541. I think it has been updated to the 1896 specs, but would like to have those that know have a...
This rifle doesn't have many markings on it. It does have Liege proof marks. The barrel is 32" long and has a bore about .464". I think it's possible it was a single shot converted to box magazine....
7.65 x 53 is very close.
The only way to make an intelligent guess would be to have a full chamber cast. So I went back and got a full cast out. The chamber is definitely shorter than 8 x 57. my fumblings show a case about...
Here's a picture of my chamber cast on top and 8.15x46R on the bottom.
8.15 has a much longer neck and a very shallow shoulder angle.
Also using a 98 action for a rimmed cartridge is not ideal,...
Agreed, odd.
Thanks Eagle but I'm not sure I understand. If the barrel matches the gun and was .323" in 1918, how would they shrink the bore to .318"?
If the barrel was mismatched then I could see that as a...
Thanks for postings. The bore won't accept the pilot of new .323" bore 8 x 57 reamer. The slugged bore measures .318", so it's a J bore as opposed to a newer .323" S or spitzer bore. What baffles me...
I'm working on a 98 KAR and it has me stumped. It's an Erfurt dated 1918.
It won't chamber a 8x57 cartridge. I tried to do a chamber cast but the chamber is pitted and I couldn't get the full cast...
