I did a chapter on the L42 in The British Sniper, iv not attempted a book on that particular rifle yet. Hopefully if The Green Meanie goes well that will be the next challenge.

Coming soon in The Green Meanie. L96A1.
The Green Meanie traces the roots, the development, and the distinguished service career of the L96A1 sniper rifle. This fascinating story, meticulously...
Promo's rifle is a ex Beds police rifle. The reason these rifles were marked with the L96 engravings is because the actions were taken straight from MOD contract production. These action bodies were...
SOLD I have for sale a rare and original IWS bracket for mounting night vision on the L42A1 sniper rifle. This item is probably the hardest to find original item of the rifle's CES.
Yes you can. Before being finished in suncorite (the original, not today’s version) the bracket was green phosphate coated, this can not be replicated today due to the old ingredient being banned....
If anyone is interested there is an original IWS bracket for the L42A1 sniper rifle for sale on a FaceBook selling page called Contact Right Militaria.
CWS was designed in combination with the SA80 and when it entered service it wasn’t compatible with the L96 until the mount was developed.
The parts catalogue shows the flat artists brush as the dedicated lens brush but in all the years I have collected L42’s as well as rifles I have handled in service I have never ever seen a flat...
The commercial S&B 6x42 is the same body, however depending on how old your scope is the ocular focus ring maybe different.
A plan to extend the L42’s service life was considered when the L96 had...
I have one with broad arrow marks. One on the mount on the underside of the scope and one on the tripod.
Nice picture Neil!!!
Cheers Geoff!
Cheers Gil, that’s useful.
Many thanks fellas
Can anyone advise what command workshops served the L42 sniper rifle and were operational in the 80s?
Slow progress at the moment with one thing and another but it’s shaping up well.
Have a look in The British Sniper, A Century of Evolution and you will see historical pictures of L42’s clad in green sniper tape.
I suppose the question is how many tons of pressure does your home load create? The L42 is proofed to comfortably withstand 19 tons which in all likelihood is far greater than that generated by the...
However, your cases are the first indicator of excessive pressure. I done load development in years gone bye and walked a load up to a desired finished load with normal brass at the start and brass...
Sierra 168 SMK with 42grain of RE15 behind it. Fed gold match primer. I’ve used this load for years through both of my L42’s and is a superb load at 600 yards with no signs of pressure overload on...
If there is any wind on the day you might find the 168 will fair it better. Just a thought??
Hahahaha! The image on page 137 is of a good friend of mine who at the time was training in horrendous winter weather. He is crouched in a frozen stream and soaking wet from stalking through snow. At...
