Not sure about foolproof, but post some pics and we can give you an opinion. Original finish vs. a period GI refinish is tough to tell sometimes. Many times a civilian refinish is more obvious.
Base and mounting screws located. All bearing balls replaced and having Scott Stonehill make me some replacement screws.
Scott Stonehill made me a mounting bracket and screws for the No 4 action. Seems as though there is a bit of runout in the elevation screw as it binds slightly on the detent for one or two clicks....
And they just keep showing up. The rear was cracked, but it is already glued and clamped.
As always, curious about the markings.
Jc5, check your PM's.
Browsing one of the auction sites, I came across a strange (to me anyway) BSA barreled action. It looks like a No 1 but is only marked BSA Co on the right butt socket which I presume makes it a...
FWIW, there was a "FF" marked No 1 barrel complete with D&T'd receiver on eBay the other day. Unusual to see two in only a couple of days.
Another rear guard found me yesterday.
I have seen markings applied by the importer to indicate caliber as well, so that seems entirely possible.
Many No4's in the US were/are import marked near the muzzle.
Well, will you look at what I turned up Sunday morning. The forum software rotated my pics again.

As an update, it seems all the screws in this sight are 8BA, the same size as the elevation plate on my PH5E.
My sight showed up in the mail yesterday. It is heavier than I expected. Bubba did indeed lose the W&E detent balls but the springs were still there. I've got it all stripped down to bits for...
Thanks Alan. I might have a factory bracket located, but this gives me options.
So far I have completely disassembled this sight, cleaned all the bits, lost one detent ball (replacements are inbound anyway) and have mostly reassembled everything. I'm down to the screws now. They...
While I am working on my project Rawson sight, a friend came up with a PH5E just like the one in the OP here: https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=29759
Same clamp on base and all. He's going...

Before XP-82 flew 12/31/18, I believe the last flight of a P-82 was 10/10/87.
It showed up in the mail yesterday. Looks pretty nice, the P-H eyepiece has a yellow glass filter in it. Anyone know the model number of the eyepiece?
I'll probably ask Scott Stonehill to make me...
I always thought that those looked kind of chintzy compared to the units made by Maynard Buehler. I've had both side by side and in my opinion, the Buehler models are finished much nicer. They appear...
I have the gallows arm for a Rawson sight on the way with an aperture. Where might i find a mounting base for a No 1 Mk III and the screw to mount the arm to the base?
I've done a lot of looking...
Thanks Roger. Makes we glad I paid the web price and not the eBay price with I think was around $60 US for the probable reproduction.
It could be, it just looked a little different to me.
One of these days, I'll oil it up and see how it looks then.
I wonder if it might be a reproduction? Nothing in the GPC listing says...
These showed up in the mail today.
One came from a private party, the other is supposed to be "NOS Walnut" and came from here: Handguard, Rear, Walnut | Gun Parts Corp.
I'm not so sure I think...
