As you'd suspect, the punch mark is from Poyer. It's frustrating to find out that some people can sound so definitive when they don't have all the facts. I wonder if they really think they do.

Thanks, supercub, I'll look for it.
Mike
It's curved! It's curved! Supercub, you just made my day. I guess it is one of Poyer's errors. A question: where did you get that info? Clearly, I need a better reference source.
Another question:...
Rick,
1. The bolt is marked with a punch mark on the bottom of the bolt handle root which Poyer says is Rock Island's mark. Also, the bolt body shows no narrowing around the the safety lug which,...
I've been doing some research into a Smith Corona M1903-A3 that's been in my closet for some time. As a reference, I'm using Joe Poyer's "The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle And Its Variations." I don't...
Hi,
I have a Remington (receiver) M1917 with some barrel markings I don't understand. On the bottom of the barrel just ahead of the receiver, there are the letters "GG" beneath which is the number...
Is there anthing written - or does anyone know - whether firing reduced loads in low-numbered 1903's reduces the risk of a failure? If the answer is posted, I haven't been able to find it.
Thanks,...
Tom,
When would the conversion be likely to have taken place? I'm wondering if the conversion could account for the 1918 barrel.
Thanks,
Mike
Chuck,
It's unfortunate that you only hear from those who "know a better way" when you post a tip. I'm sure I'm not the only one (in fact, I'm sure I'm in the majority) who respects your knowledge...
Oops, I must have been thinking of another rifle because the 1903 is 19,079.
Gentlemen,
While I haven't torn down the rifle yet, I suspect it's going to turn out to be a mixmaster. However, it has a very low serial number, 19079, which I believe makes it an early...
What do the low-number rifles with the proper stock sell for? I don't recall having seen one for sale.
Johnny,
Those are excellent points. I think I'll look it over in detail before I make a decision.
Thanks,
Mike
Hello,
I have a Springfield 1903 in the 400,XXX serial number range that's in quite good condition. However, it's in a newer commercial reproduction stock with a glossy finish. I'm not sure of the...
Thank you, gentlemen. Mystery (to me) solved!
Mike
Thank you, Patrick. Any idea why it's "7 - 8" rather than "7 - 18?" I can't find any evidence of a missing 1.
Mike
Chuck,
Never mind. I read your post more thoroughly and I understand your point about the hunting sight.
Thanks again,
Mike
Chuck,
Good information. I never thought about a conversion job. Where to you see the evidence of a hunting sight?
Thanks,
Mike
This is a Remington rifle, serial number 412,685. I believe it was manufactured in 1918. The receiver and bolt are Remington. Most of the other parts that can be seen without a detailed break-down...
Thank you, gentleman. That's exactly what I wanted to know.
Mike
Hello,
I want to post some pictures and, before I do, I'd like to make the markings easier to see by putting the white stuff I often see in the markings to make them more legible. Can someone...
XL39F1,
I guess it's reassuring to know that my barrel isn't the only one! I'll be looking forward to seeing the picture. Thanks for going to the trouble.
Mike
Thunderbox,
Looking at the bare metal with your input, you're right. It has been polished. That accounts for a little bit of worn-looking finish on the unpainted surface. A little more of the...
Gav,
Thanks for your comment. It's interesting that you see it as "wear." That's the way mine looks too although I haven't described it that way. It looks to me as though a metal finish other...
A quick introduction: I've been a member of the forum some time, and I posted a few times before life got in the way of fun. Did you miss me? At any rate, I'm happy to be
back and I plan to be more...
