It was all apparently made in the 1950s, both calibers, and much of it was surplussed in the '70s and '80s. The 7.9 is the only surplus I shoot in my G43.

Not South African. You have post-war (1950s) 7.9 Mauser ammo made in Canada, on a clandestine US (CIA) contract. This well-documented "secret" ammo also exists in 9mmP.
