Interesting, and hard to say if those sling swivels were brazed on at Long Branch or somewhere else. It wouldn't make much sense for Savage to have done it, unless they found that easier than making...
Asleep at the switch there I was: notice the sling swivel on the guard as per the Model C Trials Rifles. That would suggest a very early piece indeed. Pre-production as others have mentioned.
