Good Luck!
I thought it looked familiar.......It's available on this site IIRC. I must do a 'corrigendum' as I made a couple of false assumptions re the origins of the lateral adjustment capstans on the side...
Hi Promo. Yes, I do, somewhere, but don't ask to see it by yesterday as I will have to search it out! Bruce gave it to me in about 1996! I will endeavour to find it for you, though.
I don't know if...
You could try a pm to Seaforth72. Colin keeps close tabs on surviving scopes & rifles & may be able to assist. Over the years he has compiled a substantial database. No guarantees, but worth a try.
Another reason I may have to buy a copy.........to find out......
Yes, it's an interesting piece. I don't know whether the SMLE over bore PPCo produced claw mounts pre-date the P'14 claw mounts made by the same company, or not. They were almost certainly made more...
I don't know surpmil.............I may just wait & buy a copy of Lance's forthcoming book to find out!;)
They aren't common but over the years I've managed to acquire three.
Here are two of them. They currently look appalling, & as you may surmise they came out of India somewhat the worse for wear....
Never heard of such an item, & yes, it does look a bit 'home made'..........or should I say, a 'field assembly'.
I dislike the term 'force matched' & don't use it. A rifle either has a matching bolt or a mis-matched bolt. Further, a matching bolt may be original matching or may be 're-matched'. As Sapper740 has...
My thoughts, too, Mick, though I've not yet managed to find a shred of evidence to support it........
Thanks for your input. Much appreciated. No, there is no 'Periscopic Prism Co.' nor 'Model 1918' engraved/rolled onto the tube. The markings on the range drum saddle appear to be instead of rather...
Yes, it's rather nice. I like the way the top is notched out in case you have a wind gauge on your rear sight......
You're also not stressing the body lightly engraving it, be they original engraving marks or FTR markings. Thumping it with a hammer is somewhat different!
BSA Shirley did engrave some serials on...
Quite a find. Yes, some things are so scarce replacing them is not an option, no matter how deep your pockets! The stuff is just not there to be had......
The serial number is there - it's on the butt socket above the M 1942. It's actually a Maltby 1942 No4 Mk1.
Pretty sure they're in the Lee Enfield Story. Not many made I don't think, though the MkV's manufactured as such were produced to the total of 20,000. But if this rifle is what I think it may be, it...
Extremely rare & valuable if I'm not mistaken. It isn't really my niche but it looks like one of the Mk3 SMLE's that were converted to MkV configuration.......Hopefully someone else more into these...
Hello. Well, in all honesty I can't remember if I gave my two penn'orth on this one or not; I do get people asking me for opinions on a fairly regular basis & my memory is terrible, so me not...
Thanks for your input gents - all welcome.
Yes, I'm leaning towards an experimental/test/prototype piece. It is conceivable that a more appreciable quantity could have been fitted to the SMLE,...
Since the advent of the internet I don't get offered nice bits & pieces to buy 'over the counter' at arms fairs like I used to. So long as it is a non-restricted item, it is so easy for people simply...
Thanks Peter. Yes, I agree - in spite of the conversion you still have the original separate lenses mounted directly into the tube, & maybe only one or even no anti-backlash springs. Thanks for...
I gather it was common practice to extemporise some sort of cheek support, such as perhaps by using a field dressing taped to the butt. On the other hand, if you're right handed but left eye...
Well, I don't know about everyone else, but I'm mightily impressed! She's a beaut!
I agree, the most likely reason for the front one of the front pad screws being oversize is because the threads got stripped. The other two screws look like 4BA's, although they are flat heads not...
