Mistaken identity sorry
The rifle came with that hand guard for a Model 1901 rear sight I would get a Model 1901 rear sight for it. Be advised that the screws are also specific to sights and the "01 takes a "long headed"...
A 1901 rear sight is going to be easier to find and less expensive than a hand guard for a Model 1896 rear sight. One other concern if you plan on shooting much is the height of the front sight...
That is an 1896 receiver. The "bolt handle support" was removed with the Model 1898. Model 1896s were produced into early 1898 before the model change. It would be interesting to know your serial...
Agreed the hand guard appears to be for the Model 1901 rear sight. The sight you bought appears to be a Model 1896 both correct for a model 1898 Krag but shaped differently. Krag screw holes are...
Bringing this back up for those that frequent multilple Krag forums like I do. We are up and running but previous members will need to reregister.
Do not use an old bookmark, go to the web site,...
We are running again but in maintenance mode for now. We will be working out the bugs this weekend (hopefully all of them). Viewing the forum should be possible for most but no new posts for now....
If the receiver is marked Model 1899 Then it started life as a carbine if it is marked Model 1898 (with a serial number falling in 1900 production) then it started life as a rifle. The Model 1899...
without actual documentation it is just another 1896 carbine no matter what serial numbers are listed around it. with Krags close is only just that.......close
Did some digging. change to rear of barrel was done around 213,000 beginning July 1899.
So if your Kentucky Krag falls before that serial # you should be OK
On US Krags it is not the threads but the cut at the breach end that is different. Early barrels had a square edge cut on the end of the barrel and later versions had a rounded/tapered (very slight)...
Magazines for the 44US series and the 140 are two different animals. They have similar shapes and will fit the other rifle but the locking system is totally different. The lock on the 44US mag is on...
It began life as a rifle, that serial number is way too high for an 1898 carbine
Interesting that the gunsmith added a forward action screw on the sporter. They were standard on Norwegian and Dane Krags but omitted on the US version
Can anyone help with an ID? I have had this for many years and IRC I was told it was a machinegun sight of some sort.
I am thinking of selling it as I have not seen or used it in 15++ years so ideas...
Just heard this from a reliable source. Bannerman's Island reportedly disapeard into a huge sink hole in the Hudson river this morning. I am not close enough to get local radio or TV confirmation,...
Noel,
I don't think yours is a 1896, if it was there would be a bolt handle support as a part of the action and a much larger "scalloped" cut out around it in the stock.
Is that a scope mount on...
The hand guard is correct for the M1901 rear sight, just been shortened at the rear.
I believe so
