Sounds like a 1942/3
My friend, that’s a 1913!!
Hey mate
Can you please clarify what the 1943 rebuild stamp on the stock of your 1942 rifle looks like.
Without seeing it Brian I would suggest the second number is the inventory number for the military district it was issued to. That's generally the case when there is some confusion over a second...
81404 is a typical 1917 serial number, could the other number be the inventory number Brian?
Very interesting.
What's the assembly number on that one muffer?
Yes mine was done in 1950.
What's the reason for doing it though? To me, it seems the action on my rifle was scrubbed to match the barrel that was preused and dated 1943.
You lost me in all that mate.
So there was 405 actions scrubbed and renumbered in 49/50 and 16888 in 50/51?
If it was a practice, is it really an anomaly?
Scrubbed and renumbered receivers is probably more common than you think muffer. I have one the same and seen others. In each case the barrel was a previously used item. Action renumbered to match...
Unfortunately Fred, if it's not numbered, it doesnt match. But it's not that big a deal.
Fred is the bolt scrubbed and not numbered?
If it were a HT it would show signs of previously having mounts for the scope. It sounds like a H model conversion from the 30's. I only suggested HT because you mentioned the serial number was in...
Ok so your 1917 H is actually a HT, is that right?
It will be a challenge. I've had every year except for 1913 and 1938. Could of had both those as well but couldn't justify the prices at the time so I never completed my quest. Good luck but don't...
I had a 1927, serial number B16583, barrel date 11/27, butt date 1928. So close. Mine was a very good matching rifle, how is yours?
I haven't seen any source at this point in time to suggest barrel dates were applied on assembly, where as it seems to me by rifle samples, it was applied earlier. I follow the most widely accepted...
Kev are we over complicating this a bit?
You still havent convinced me barrels were dated on assembly, but just to clarify two points. Are you saying a rifle that was assembled in July 1942, would...
Kev look at your own survey. Blind freddy can see all the 43 dated barrels attached to D prefixed 1942 actions. That's because they were assembled in 1943. No doubt many of those have 43 dated butts...
Thats exactly right 5th. It was busy times and many rifles can be found with 41 dated actions and 43 dated butts. It seems it didn't matter what order actions were assembled and that's why there...
You'd be 100% right mate.
That is a very nice example of a rare year in Lithgow production. Deserving of its own thread for those who appreciate the hard to find lithgows.
For the record, every...
No I can't recall but it doesn't matter. Good on you it's a nice one.
Kev there's a lot of data I could have contributed at one time, but the rifles are no longer mine. I asked permission from the now owner of these if I could post the picture.
Muffer for your records, I think it was a little earlier than end of 1920. At least 4'20 and I thought I had one earlier than that but I can't find it just now.
Cinders have we discussed this 1921 lithgow once before? I think it's had a reblue as well at the time it was restocked probably in 1944. Ive owned and examined quite a few like this one.
Nice...
