Am posting a few photos of an 7.62 M1I got in a CMP
auction in 2004 when they offered quite a few of them. It is SA 652XXX, born June 42(if I read the chart correctly) and has a barrel dated 5/42. Barrel chamber is sleeved to 7.62. Other than that it is a mixmaster. Buttstock is birch replacement but the walnut handguards are probably original; at the very least they've been on the rifle way longer than the buttstock. Rear handguard appears to not have the relief cut, but the photo I have is not the best photo to show this.
The reason I bid on it was because it had "7.62 NATO" stamped on the left side of the receiver just in front of the receiver heel and I had read in Canfield's book that only the first 100 conversions were marked this way. I believe I saw 2 or 3 others marked this way over the weeks the 7.62s were auctioned off. Don't know if the current thought is still that only 100 were stamped this way, but it is still pretty cool. Would value any thoughts or comments.
