    markings in sling well

I picked up a Postal Meter carbine and it has a stamp in the sling well I am not familiar with. I'm guessing maybe Rock Ola but need verification. It has a Letter R with a flaming bomb and I also noticed a tiny letter N separate from the other two. Any help appreciated.

Could the letter R actually be a letter P ? Could be a scratch/chip that makes it look like an R?????

It looks just like the marking on the IR (Robert Irwin) replacement stocks, complete with the flaming bomb. I wonder where the I is though? I was at a show over the weekend where a vendor had 2 or 3 of IR stocks, so that the marking is fresh in my mind.

I have come to the conclusion that it is indeed a war time replacement stock. I finally found mention of them having IP or RP and some other letter combinations along with the ordnance bomb. The small N still has me baffled though. The entire carbine is in great shape....here are some quick photos I have. SA postwar trigger housing, I-I Inland hammer, AI Inland flat bolt, Winchester Op Rod, Buffalo Arms 11-43 barrel with proof P. Winchester marked handguard. The MW is just a hair over 2 so hope it will be a nice shooter.

When I look at it and think P it looks like a P. I think the mark that makes it look like an R is just a mark, scratch, bump etc.

    Best Regards.....Frank

Thanks for that information Bob. I seem to recall reading something in the past about the fit around the recoil plate and different stock makers but don't have much knowledge on that subject. Nice to know indeed.....Tom

And yes, it's a proof P with an incidental scratch where the leg of an R would be.
