bolt lock on an Arisaka?
I have a type 44 carbine. I shot my blackbear with it this spring however that was the last shot I ever got out of it(talk about something to make you a little nervous about). the bolt was siezed. I was able to get it open with some leverage and never felt anything snap or give way and there wasn't much dirt anywhere inside before cleaning so I don't think that was a contributing factor. however now the action feels like it's full of sand. it's gritty, stiff and not at all the smooth crisp action that it was until that time. I don't see anything broken off and the bolt appears to be in perfect shape. has anyone ever seen this happen?

That's a new one on me! The cocking cam area comes to mind, but it's not nearly as big a factor as on a "cock on open" design. Have you pulled the bolt assembly apart?

How long have you had it.? Perhaps some old cosmoline in the chamber. How's the extractor look? is it chattering on the receiver.? Only things I can think of.....

Doubtful it's damaged, one of the strongest actions ever made. Sounds like an obstruction or dirt of some kind somewhere.

I've had it since december. took it apart and cleaned it good when I got it and again after this incident happened. it has never happened before. I have taken the bolt assembly apart and there are no burs, rust deposits, cosmoline ETC. as near as I can tell there is nothing out of place and nothing looks damaged. I am really at a loss.

Have you removed it from the stock and cleaned/inspected the trigger mechanism? There's a tab on the sear that engages a notch on the bolt bottom and keeps it locked closed during firing. Debris preventing the sear from returning to it's neutral position when the trigger is released will lock it up tighter than dick's hat band. Prying it open may have damaged the sear causing roughness during cycling.

that may be what happened. I'll have to see about getting it apart and checking that out.

ok forgive me, my terminology is not the best when it comes to these rifles.
I took it apart and cleaned it, there wasn't much around the trigger but I did notice that of the 2 parts that protrude through the bottom of the receiver, the forward one(rocks up when trigger is pulled) had a nasty bur on it to I took a dremel to it and got rid of most of the bur(I really don't want to go overboard and have to get a new part) and now, though it isn't quite as smooth as my type 99, it is much better, I believe that was the culprit. I may leave it as is or I may see about getting a new part from numrich but at least now it's serviceable.

I'd check it real close for a corresponding burr on the piece of metal that caused the burr on the trigger assembly. Could be something got caught between them and caused the damage. Good that it's at least working again.
