Unknown weapon mount/tripod/bipod part - Can you help?
Hi all
This has been recovered recently from a WW2 era British army dump where everything that comes out of the ground is weapon related in some way. I've been searching for hours to try and track this part down. I think it maybe part of a weapon vehicle mount, or possibly tripod/bipod part but my searches have drawn a blank.
It is a heavy piece, 10 inches long. Top clamp has a hefty hand turner, and the bottom piece is obviously designed to allow lateral movement on whatever it fits in to.
Do you recognise it?

I think that you've got it upside down. I would say that it''s definitely a part from a Bren mount of some sort by the shape of the lower hole that sits between the rear Bren mount lugs on the butt. If you roughly measure the width I'm sure it will be about that width too. But I could be wrong because.............. The thumbwheel part looks like it's come from an M1917 type tripod. Could it be a Bren adaptor for a 1917 tripod?

I agree with Peter, Looks Bren like but I suspect it fits the front mounting rather than the butt. Reason being that it doesn't look adjustable and the arc needed to swing the gun left to right would have to be large and need a lot of space, something vehicles don't have. The thumb wheel is also nothing like I have on any of my Tripods including the 1917.
Could be Motley Mount?

That looks like it Brit Plumber, except for the thumb wheel. Maybe earlier/later design though.
Many thanks!

That patent is a good example of what's stupid about patents. How on earth did he EVER gat a patent for something like that. We were always taught that you can't patent a) the bleedin obvious, b) the laws of physics and c) metallurgy utilising the naturally occurring

Applying for a Patent is a laborious task, the ones Peter point out are just the basics, the wording hasn't changed in over a few hundred years, and to get the patent it needs to be ...........I give up in the end on mine, although it was published which to me is the worst bit, as any one can come along steel your idea and word it correctly..... ( bit more to it than than that but you get the idea) Copyright is the far better route.
You may ask what was my idea.... I made an adjustable pin spanner that was for hand grinding machines etc to release the lock nut, I'll get back with the application number and post a pic of the the trial example (still used today by me )

You're dead right BigDuke. I 'invented' a set of alarmed hoses that would sound an alarm if the flexible hoses in your washing machine, dishwasher - or anything else - spring a leak*. They could also send a signal to your mobile phone (or could nowadays, immediately/simultaneously release a spring loaded stop valve). I could make a patent simple but the patent office could only make it complicated, and at a cost of tens of thousands of £££££'s, using a megga expensive patent lawyer. Made a couple of sets for myself later. Also learned that never to go to the manufacturers because, guess what they'll do......... ? But I digress.
* these leaks that only ever get larger cost households and insurers millions especially in modern flimsy houses
