thanks for the input. I figured the "brake" was a bubba job. Can I remove the bubba'd front end easily and replace it with one that is OEM? From the mark on the back of the rear housing I am under the impression that it is at the least a Norinco accessory.

No, a new barrel is in order he drilled the barrel itself. The cover IS Cicom made, agreed.

sadly new barrel is probably not in its future, and restoring her to her OEM glory will not happen. only other option I can see is removing the front sight assembly, threading and mounting a muzzle device and scout scoping it

Went out to the shop this morning before anyone was up with a coffee and a cigar to do some pondering about this bubba'd barrel
really took a look at it and came to the conclusion that it very possibly DID come from the factory (more likely the importer) like it is and never even had a bayonet.
Reasons why I'm leaning that way seem evident to me ion this photo
First, the end where is is thought to be cut is evenly blued to the rest of the gun (flash might obscure this but it is)
And second, the barrel ends before the front sight assembly (or am I seeing this wrong?)

WoW that really is a humped gun!! They just ain't worth all the trouble and money you would need to put into it. Go to a show and buy one if original military configuration is what your after. My 2cs.....

Not sure what you mean by "humped" ? I would agree that it was probably NOT a milsurp piece from the start and imported in such a configuration to meet some arbitrary ban criteria . But Im 90% sure that the barrel wasn't chopped, AND that the top cover IS a Chicom (Norinco) accessory. Just trying to get as much info about it's lineage as possible since it seems that it's "quirks" have raised some eyebrows. Have a Yugo in Milsurp configuration, like I said, just looking for some answers

So the saga continues:
Got the sight assembly off with some PB Blaster and some heat
slight step on the barrel to limit sight assembly, barrel end chamfered ( no crown) , and bluing consistent even to the muzzle

I feel the barrel was chopped .
if I had a latte and welding equipment, I would make it into a para . not easy to find a replacement front sight assembly so I would try to salvage it by filling in the holes.
yes, the top cover is a norinco top cover but that's still doesn't mean that much.

Hi if you will measure the end of the sight inside and measure the the distance on the barrel I believe you will see that they match. at least it looks like it hasn't been cut by where the pin slot is located from the end of the barrel you can find a new sight end on ebay and other places. have a good day
