Are some turned into parts kits and sold? Its been a while since I looked, but there used to be a lot of handgun parts kits on either fleabay or GB that were clearly guns that had been "deactivated". I don't know where else such a variety would come from. Might be trying to make some extra money that way -vs- scrap steel??

There are firms that do just that.
They take in confiscated firearms, strip off all the bits, then destroy the receivers (the only actual "Firearm" part).
    Then they sell the bits.
Paid to destroy and paid for the bits. Back home we'd say "they got 'em comin' and going'."

If we were talking fishing reels... I know that there are sellers on the net that specialize in picking up older reels then breaking them down and selling each - one part at a time....

When it's a discontinued item you can no longer get parts for.. they're the only game in town...

    TSA does pretty well.
After getting through at Reagan to fly home I noticed a couple of blue totes full of pocket knives etc.
One smaller tote was half full of change that had been picked up off the floor. I could see more $change on the floor but it was in a off limits area.
Outside after landing A younger guy came up and asked me if I could do him a favor. He had a pocket knife on him he said was a gift from his Father and wanted to know if I could mail it to his home. He hurriedly wrote down his info and dashed off for his plane. I mailed the knife but hadn't heard anything from him for nearly 3 months. Finally contacted me, he had been all round Europe but got his knife back and Thanked me.
Working at TSA could give one a decent sideline income, checkout these items:

Well the DA in this case has filled 64 count indictments against the owner of the 1000 weapons. He had a C&R license but sold weapons which he cannot do with a C&R other then to upgrade his collection. And had assault weapons too. (oh my. One being a 50 cal. Barrett.) Just another extreme case from the land of Fruits and Nut's. And they have plenty of both there.

...and you can bet that whoever was manning the property facility after that seizure - was just buried in paperwork... Along with a copy of the property receipt for each firearm they'd have to have a copy of the NCIC report on each weapon (showing that each was checked to find out if stolen or wanted in another investigation), and an official entry for each weapon into the facility's logbook.... and that's just for starters. None of that would include the various paperwork if an individual weapon was needed for forensic analysis (or to see if any erased serial numbers could be restored....).

The property receipts would be done by the impounding offiicer(s) - everything else would be the property guy's work.... and just to make things even more fun, every item that was needed for court purposes would have to be logged in or out (and after a certain time period - any weapons still in custody would generate a disposition request to whoever impounded it.... and that would get repeated annually as long as they still held the item(s)...). Not exactly the stuff action movies show at all...

I did that sort of work for two years a long time ago and I'll bet the procedures haven't changed much over the years although no two agencies do things the same way...
