    No4T transit chest mark

The transit chest below has just sold on evilbay in the UKicon. Apologies if it's been asked before but what does the "BA5885" stencilled on the chest mean?

From the edge stamping shown it looks like the chest was manufactured in 1946.

p.s. it sold for GBP 1420.

It is the Stores part number (Vocab Number)

A quick internet search shows :

Marking will vary between chests as the stores code and TEL STG MK number change depending upon which mark of scope the rifle is equipped with. In this case it is the most common version, BA5885 for the No. 32 MK. 3 (or written as MK. III sometimes.) Many chests were repainted in service and will often be found in glossy green and have markings painted around or reapplied. Many have a yellow marking (solid circle or band) which may be a stores marking. As well one occasionally finds regimental markings, shipping marking and later, NATO stores numbers. Old markings are often painted out.

Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

I was looking to correlate the BA assembly / short CES number against the content of the chest and the lid labels - I have observed 3 different lid labels for the war years that each should have a relevant BA number. Any head start on this comparison Alan de E or others?

The No4T had a different stores (BA) number for each variant (long butt, short butt, Mk1 scope, Mk2 scope etc etc)

Hopefully the attached extracts from the "Vocabulary of Army Ordnance Stores" will give you some new 'numbers' to play with.

    Note that these are for No4T Mk1/2, No4T Mk1/3, and No4T Mk2 rifles

Stores Numbers marked on one page only - I'm sure you can find them on the other pages.

    No, sorry.
But - as per my earlier post BA5885 is a No4T with a Mk3 scope.
