British Machete

Received a British machete this week, ebay purchase. It is a WWII 1944 in pretty decent condition. It came in a well made but odd scabbard for a military knife. It has no means of attachment to a belt. Fits the machete perfectly but is unmarked.

Pretty sure those old blades had a leather scabbard, we used to issue those widely. We had lots of cast off and hold over WW2 and Korea issue... The scabbard looks very recent and just a case for, say, rucksack...

I have a WWII dated scabbard to put it in. It had been occupied by a 1952 issue machete which is now in the canvas scabbard. I agree this looks like something you would use to carry inside a rucksack. It is heavy canvas and the snap secures it very well. Just can't tell if it is military or not. I wouldn't say it looks new. It has an age about it. But could easily be a civilian manufacture for the surplus market.

I think so too, I bought my first one some time ago when I was about 14...and it came in a .30 cal spare barrel case. Still have it but since procured a proper "Ontario" case from QM when the gettin' was good.

The Camillus one I have is in a leather scabbard too. Kind of odd the snaps are on the inside except that's probably how the thing was retained. The webbing canvas would be long to have come from a ruck though. Very likely not, um, First or Second World issue. It was professionally sewn on a machine though.
I'd guess(a WHAG at that) it might have been used by India, Pakistan, Burma or the like.

The snap is how it is retained, it closes right over the handle end of the blade. It's a perfect fit. The little cheap drawstring, I see no purpose for.

With it in the side pouch of a rucksack, it would be tied in place. The snap is closed and it stays. The canvas didn't come from a ruck, it's for carrying in a ruck...

We had those machettes issued to us as part of our '44 pattern kit in Malaya. We called them Gollocks...... No Gollocks!!!!! They came with a dark/jungle green webbing case. They are still issued and are part of the kit in tanks and recovery vehicles plus other odds and sods providing the crews have done a health and safety users course and are trusted members of polite society

I have to provision one for the Bren gunners door pocket on the Morris LRC I hope I pass the stringent Gollocks tests! I have a photo as reference in an example vehicle but cannot post due to copyright etc. :/
