MYSTERY ITEM (CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT IT IS)

Perhaps It is my imagination but this looks like some type of grenade rifle Butt Pad.
    Am I all wet? The pocket is 3 3/4" x 1 1/4".

    Input (even guesses) welcome.

I'm assuming that it is a blind pocket, i.e. the aperture doesn't pass right through? If so, perhaps a rubber "foot" for a metal leg of some description or an anti-vibration rubber pad?
