1909 Argentine

I got this M1909 Argentine Mauser last week. I bought a matching (bayonet to scabbard) M1909 bayonet at a gun show a few weeks ago, so it must have been fate. It is all-matching including the cleaning rod. It took me hours to clean off all of the cosmoline.

The story goes that the Germans were overwhelmed with the Turkish army contract, but didn't want to lose the Argentine business. So they had their commerical house make the Argentine rifles. Hence the commerical triggerguard. They may well be the best of all German pre-WWI rifles.

What can one say? Jealousy is the sincerest form of flattery, perhaps? And man, am I jealous! That is a lovely rifle. I hope you will not hide it in a gunsafe for evermore, but give it some exercise and let us know how it shoots.

Did all this model have blued receiver? I recall seeing one with a polished finish.

I believe the receivers were originally in the white. The bluing was done when they were arsenal refurbished. I don't think this rifle was used after it was refurbished and stored because there was a lot of cosmoline still on it.
