    Tulle percussion musket..what model?

Just walked out of an antique shop with this Tulle percussion musket. Wood has been shortened on it. Im wondering what model it is...an M1853? It looks, however, to have 1840 or 1841 on the tang. Flint to percussion?

As the tang says, it is a Model 1840, the first purpose built Frenchicon military musket. The M1822 was a flint musket with a standard front action lock. Remove the lock from the musket and check, the Model date may also be stamped on the inside of the lock plate. The patent breech also indicates it is an M1840.

While none were imported by Confederate purchasing agents, a fair number of French muskets were imported by Northern buyers during the American Civil War and, though of very high quality, due to the non standard caliber - .71 - were considered 4th Class Arms and very few if any were issued for front line use. Those that were issued were used in the Western Theater for training and then put into storage for sale post war.
