Do you mean around the diameter of the barrel Charlie? Looks like a bit of rough machining.

    Yes around diameter.

    Must be 'rough milling'
At first, before reading his descript.... I thought it was a hack saw cut!!

Does the 9th picture from left look ok, looking up the bore from the chamber end. It looks as if it's had "certain adjustments" with a hacksaw and file or is it supposed to look like this???

You can get that kind of mistake if you do turns with a lathe from one end and then turn the project end for end and start again.

    Hello Flying10UK
This must have been a long skirted barrel that had been cut down to a short skirt. Because a long skirt is about/or is half way around the diameter. Cut back was common due to damage during the handling or installation process. After testing it was found that by cutting/machining off the damaged area that it didn't affect functioning. This helped salvage these barrels. I believe it was around mid production that a change was made calling for all new made barrels to have the short skirt.

That's why we see early made barrels with the trimmed, short skirts.

Though the one in the auction doesn't appear to be the prettiest job done. But would be fully functional as far as I know.

    HTH,

Exactly. Kind of a rough job too...almost looks like the skirt went all the way round. Then it was altered...not a very clean job on this whole barrel. Probably works though.
