All makers used them randomly throughout production. There is no specific year for them.

Did Long Branch use brass or steel buttplates?

Longbranch started using zamac zinc alloy buttplates and switched to steel late in production - ie, post-war. They didn't use brass (gunmetal) buttplates.

Claven2 qualifies as a walking milsurp encyclopedia, he's my favorite resource. On the hand guards I have a very early Savage w/o grooves and a slightly later Faz that does, can't figure it out. SDH
