Sight hood

Being new to the K98, can anyone tell me when the front sight hood came into play? Am under the impression the front sight would be grooved to accept the hood? Have a 147 1940 (SAUER) RC with no groove unless it was replaced by the Russians. Any help would be great. Thanks Experts!!!!!

Well, I know the year before they didn't have them, but I'm not exactly sure on the cut over month ...

If you want to get into comparing markings for authenticity, go to the Milsurp Knowledge Library - German Section and compare it against the 1939 147 JP Sauer K98k manufactured by JP SAUER und SOHN GEWEHRFABRIK, SUHL.

Most have the groove, but some don't. Whether they did or didn't if the Russians got a hold of it, they tossed the hoods as "non-essential" Unfortunately the considered the capture screws in the same catagory.

yes there would be grooves just under the front sight "wings". i don't know of any rifles prior to 1941 that left the factory with a sight hood.

Richard Law's book Backbone of the Wehrmacht says that "660" coded rifles (Steyr Daimler Puch) started putting sight hoods on rifles in 1940 on or after the "k" block. but given how many flaws that book has, i don't really know if that's reliable.

you can find pre-1941 rifles with sight hoods, but that was either done in the field or somebody did it post war.
