serialnumber question of a M1 A1

good morning,this is my first post,and i have a question about my M1 A1.
the barrel is dated 2-44 and the serial of the inland is 5403xxx. Now i would like to know,if it is correct? I reed in books,that the number iwas made in december.
The carbine has a barrel band type ll,a flip saftey and a type ll rear sight. the triggerhouse is stamped N,but i dont know this code.

Akazie, I have two, 5,222,xxx and 5,116,xxx both have 4-44 barrels. Yours is almost three hundred thousand newer than mine but has an earlier barrel. I'm not sure how that happened, but they certainly were cranking them out at that time. Lets see what others may come up with. How about some pictures......Frank

5403xxx dates to August 1944. There is a very good chance the barrel is correct even though it is dated 2-44.

First in last out. I agree that barrel is probably right for the gun. It was at the bottom of the parts bin when your receiver came down the assembly line.

Just curious, it seems that when a barrel was replaced, the new one had a current date, so to speak.

What are the chances of a barrel being replaced with a new, old stock one? Older than the "production date" of the receiver, but still new. When at war, all supplies were used, so I assume its possible. Just my $.02.

akazi, very possible that the receiver and barrel are correct. Thanks for the pics, looks like a nice "jumper carbine". Is the leather coming off the top of the cheek pad? How about a close up of the barrel band? Is there a P in a circle on the back of the stock above the grip? Can you desribe or take pics of any other stamps on the stock or grip? Love those M1A1's thanks.....Frank

yes,the leather pad has a crack on the border,ca5cm. but without them,the pad is ok. the oiler behind is marked IS. the grip has the P,and in the stock is also a stamp, IO. i live in switzerland,and here you know no much about the carbines,a carbine is a carbine,only the barell date and the producer is more or less known. i also learn only since a few years more of them,thanks the good sites in us. some more picture for you,and sorry,when my english is not always correct. etienne

i cleaned the stock only with water and cleanser,and the bigger digs i get a little out with the iron,but i sanded it not!! so it looks not to bad.

akazie, thanks for sharing the info on your carbine. It looks like a real nice "second contract" M1A1. Leave it just the way it is. Are there many carbine's in Switzerland?.....Frank

when i bought the carbine some years ago, the dealer had about 4 pieces.but otherwise i havent saw much of the M1 A1,they are also quite rare,and expensive. mine cost me 1100 chf,today ca.1000$. normal carbines there are earlier a plenty on the market,but today also always less. prices are ca.400-500$. i have five carbines incl. the parachute.
