Bolt Handle
On my M1917 Eddystone, I only have an "E" on the side of the handle near where it meets the bolt body. I have no other "E" on the handle anywhere.
Just where did they stamp the early bolts on the handle? I know that they stamped it on the underside but anywhere else?

I know that on the rifles with the serial number 342463 and 602555 that there isn't any "E" stamped on the underside of the bolt handle.
Is it safe to assume that this is true to all of the rifles between those 2 numbers? If so, then when did they start putting the "E" under the bolt handle?
If the "E" was put on at the factory from the start, then some people missed putting it on.

the 1917 bolts iv seen with the serial number of the rifle stamped on them are Canada lend lease rifles.
however, it could be a P14 bolt..

Is the bolt body itself marked anywhere else besides underneath the bolt handle?

Both of my Eddystone bolts have the "E" stamped under the handle, though one is fairly light and not struck evenly. Both bolts also have a flaming bomb and a letter stamped next to it on top of the bolt handle, if I remember correctly one is a Y and the other is a T. Other than that, there aren't any other stamps on the bolt that I can find.

All original M1917 bolts were stamped with the makers mark under the handle and I have never seen any exception.
If it doesn't have a mark it may be a replacement bolt, I dont think a P14 bolt has anything that will interchange with the M1917 bolt (I could be wrong on the interchange though)

no serial is likely a standard US issued rifle. W =Winchester, NS = Nickle steel.
even though all standard production 17 and 14 bolts were 3.5% nickle steel, Winchester was proud of it for some strange reason.
bolts are heat treated through and through, receivers were surface hardened.

some p14 bolt parts interchange with 1917. according to Stratton. Dont know if p14 parts had E,R,W stamped on them like 1917's do. also remington model 30 commercial rifles did NOT have R stamped on thier parts. Not advisable to mix p14 and 1917 parts.
Armabill...Whats the source of your info on that range of serial numbers that did not get stamped?
Ferris's book is a must read. Cheaper than a box of factory loads
