A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. The russian guy showed the reason for an obturating ring, something they failed to reproduce on their home made bombs... Those 4.2" mortars are just a monster aren't they? Any of those where there's fire around, and you think of the increment pile you always had on hand... Remember how fiercely they burn after the shoot? How would you like to have that inside your track with you?
    Regards, Jim

I'm thinking it was burning increment fragments down the tube, caught the ignition set on fire.

    Thank You Jim,
With continued use, I could only imagine how hot they get.

Yes but if a fragment comes loose or a wet barrel, wet ammo...infinite possibilities... It's like throwing powder up in the air and lighting it. Well, you saw...

£ for pound, they're the most cost effective killing machines there are I'd say. Once the mortar teams are gelled together they're a superb example of co-ordination. Very few words except the fire control orders and........ good night nurse!

We all used to call the little 2" or 51mm mortars with HE section artillery
