S&W 1940/41 M&P Pre-Victory Revolvers

Just reviewed the MILSURP Knowledge Library material on these revolvers and found it to be informative and useful. Thanks.

I took the opportunity to check my 2 Pre-Victory S&Ws against this info and found that they both check in all respects,but one. In addition to all standard markings, one piece has the number 3 stamped over the numbers 497 at the top rear center of the frame below the hammer. This piece also shows the caliber designation 38/380 stamped on the rt side of the barrel just ahead of the frame. All of these numbers are stamped in a larger size than the other markings.

A bit of history on these revolvers. Both are genuine bringbacks which my late uncle shipped home in pieces from Europe some time after VE Day.One is his own personal issue weapon which he carried as a tank fitter from Normandy thru Belgium,Holland until the end in Germany. The other was found in a knocked out Sherman tank during the process of recovery/repair. I've known these revolvers all of my life having handled and fired them from an early age. Both are complete with original holsters,lanyards,and brass cleaning rods. The s/ns of these pieces are 7957 apart and both show a deeply struck C Broad Arrow mark.

The last time one of these was fired in anger was some 10 yrs ago when my uncle used one to pop a coon in his attic. My uncle also brought home a matching Mauser built P38 which he had picked up in Normandy. I'm pleased to own these pieces now,but I'd much rather still see them in my uncle's possession. Sadly we lost him 4 yrs ago.
