Where to find parts ?
Hello all, this will be my first post on this board. I am looking for a cleaning rod and the anti-aircraft wings that go on the rear sight. I need them for a type 99 short rifle. I would also like to find a dust cover and monopod for the same.
Anyone know of a good place to find these parts ? I want original and alot of this stuff is becoming more and more fake or reproductions.
Thanks Derrick

I take it you have done your "homework" and you know that the parts you are looking for are correct for the make and series of your type 99. The parts changed or were ommited as the war progressed. So parts for a type 99 made in 1941 would not necessarily be correct for one made in 1944. That being said, your quest may take a while and not be inexpensive. For real parts, gunboards, Japanese WTS/WTB might be a source. Ebay, and as Hank says, Gunparts Corp. is another source.
Good luck!

Gun parts
Try the gunboards.com forum and scroll down to the Japanese section. They have parts for sale there. Really the best forum for Japanese guns.

Some homework
From what I could find on the net it is a series 22 type 99 that was made at the Kokura Arsenal. Serial number #35883. I could not tell you what year it was made. If you can tell that from what little I posted that would be great.
Are the short rifles any more scarce or desireable than the long ones ?
Thanks for all the replies, Derrick

the 99 short rifles are probably the most commen rifles found. Maybe 6.5 m/m long rifles would be next. There is also a 99 long rifle, while not "rare",
in short supply. It is impossible to date a jap rifle exactly. You would think the series number would be in sequence but they are not and they were assigned to different makers. I have seen people make estimates of year only.
Go to ParallaxBill,s site, jap forum, for more detailed info.

All of the items you are looking for are appropriate for the make and series. I don't know how much you paid for the rifle, but original parts will not be inexpensive. The Kokura 22 series was made 1942-43. "The Japanese Type 99 Arisaka Rifle" is a very good book for info.
Look at the fore-end of the stock. If it originally had a monopod, there should be marks in the stock. Long rifles are usually more expensive as they were the first Type 99's made, and there weren't that many made. Prices on short rifles depend on series and maker. The more rare, the more price.

(No, I'm by no means an expert, but I do buy the books on everything I have.)

Thanks for the answer. I paid $250 for the rifle. I could of had a long type 99 that had the dust cover for the same price but thought this one was more scarce.
The numbers match on the bolt and receiver, dont see any marks on the stock that would indicate it had a monopod on it.The mum is about 97% ground off, and the blueing is great.I just wanted one to display with my Marine Corps M1903 springfield. Sort of a PTO theme. My main collecting interest is US military shotguns.
Thanks again for all the help guys, Derrick

series 22 type 99
Your rifle if it is a Type 99 series 22 was made in the last part of 1942. It should have a 3 screw front barrel band, guarded front sight, , rear band the monopod type with monopod, rear sight should be the long range with the anti aircraft wings, it should have a chrome lined bore and the bolt face should also be chromed. it should have a 2 screw rear swivel on butt stock and a cupped metal butt plate if it is still all origional as issued. There should be a mum on the top of the receiver with type 99 in Jap writing. Serial numbers should match on receiver, bolt, safety, firing pin, and on front band on bottom of the bayonet lug. it should have a cleaning rod also .Hope this helps.

series 22
I forgot one thing... It should have a dust cover numbered the same as the other parts. So when looking at the parts that are not still with the gun the value goes down. A gun with all the correct parts in this series should sell for 350.00 to 450.00. A great place to log on to to learn about Japanese guns is gunboards.com . No other web site compares to this one.
