Reloader 10X is a relatively new powder so the reloading manuals have not printed any data for it. You can find a little reloading date at the Alliant website but not for your cartridges.

Alliant has the Government contract to produce ammunition at the Lake City munitions plant. Both Remington and Winchester lost the bid and the contract at Lake City.

HINT: Winchester was running Lake City government plant until they lost the bid to Alliant, therefore Alliant will not be using WC846, W748, BL-C2 and H335 in their military ammunition. Gee I wonder what caliber military ammunition they put all the Reloader 10X in (.223 or 5.56)

Now the bad news, Reloader 10X is too fast a burning powder for the 6.5 and 7.62x54R the reloading manuals list reloader 15 and 19 and both are much slower burning.

Spend a little money and get a slower burning powder and be safe.

    Burn rate chart below.

You fall into the medium case capacity type cartridges category and slower burning powders with your bullet weights.

    Be safe and not sorry

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!

While not ideal, RL10X is certainly suitable for loading either cartridge, particularly with the lighter bullets at moderate velocity.

Here's some deformatted QuickLOAD output for both cartridges with light bullets. Remember that these are estimates and intended only as a guide for working up carefully.

    Cartridge : 6.5 x 55 Swedishicon
    Bullet : .264, 100, Sierra HP 1710
    Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.000 inch or 76.20 mm
Barrel Length : 29.0 inch or 736.6 mm
    Powder : Alliant Reloder-10x

incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.

He didn't ask about "lighter bullets" and the load density would be much lower than optimum.

There are not any loads listed for RL10X below from the Alliant reloaders guide web site.

If I'm recommending loads I don't push the envelop on safety and chamber pressure when slower powders are better suited especially when they are not in the loading manuals. RL10X was developed for the M16icon 5.56 or smaller capacity cases. They don't even list RL-15 and that is a medium burning powder.

I do not see any RL10x listed below in the Speer reloading manual and let me point out the words "Strong Commercial Actions."

I believe in handing out safe reloading information.

I load for both of the in question cartridges, and I have to say the reloader 15 is with out a doubt, the best and nicest shooting powder I have found. Look for reloading stuff at bartlett's and wideners. And, I just looked over the whole available lists at the Polygunbags.com site, really good stuff at a good price.

You're right, he asked about heavier bullets. It can work for that also. Load density is moderate - not an ideal situation, but not so different from some old standards like 46 grains of 4895 with 175-grain bullets in .30/06 (~84%). Anyway, he says he's trying to use up some excess powder -not seeking an optimum load.

There's nothing inherently wrong about using some powders "off label", especially tubular or flake double-base varieties that are relatively easy to ignite at lower densities. I see RL10X loads listed by Alliant for cartridges from .222 Rem. up to .458 Lott, including .303 Britishicon and .308 Win. loads for bullets from 123 to 180 grains. It's certainly not just for "5.56 or smaller capacity cases".

Some of us enjoy thinking "out of the box" while others are cautious about discussing anything that's not in a manual. I trust Andy is capable of deciding where he stands.

More QuickLOAD estimates, this time with heavier bullets -

    Cartridge : 7.62 x 54 R Russ.Nagant
    Bullet : .311, 174, Sierra HPBT MatchK 2315
    Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.040 inch or 77.22 mm
Barrel Length : 29.0 inch or 736.6 mm
    Powder : Alliant Reloder-10x

Again, these figures are not load recommendations. Just some information to help Andy make his own decisions - perhaps based on rational calculation instead of giving up when there's no data in the manuals for a specific combination.
