    Reamer Question....followup

For you gents that do your own chamber reaming, do you have any suggestions on which make reamer is best or at least better? Clymer or Manson or??? Also is there any benefit to using a live pilot reamer or regular pilot? I know there is quite a price difference between the two types. Thanks in advance!!

    Rick H.

Floating pilots are preferred. Esp. for accuracy builds and where lands can't be counted on to be of an EXACT size.

Rental reamers are a great way to go.

We have had some problems with Clymer. Esp. after discovering one of their pilots was non concentric. Customer service-well, EVENTUALLY they ponied up for a new barrel. But it wasn't easy to get them to actually do a run-out check of the reamer. (Faux M40a1 build- not a cheapie project!)

What do you have planned Rick is it a $5000 build or $200 ?

Myself I use Manson as Clymer would not deal direct, Manson service excellent and willing to ship outside the USAicon, I use fixed pilot but thats just me.

Mine are the simple Clymer fixed and I don't think they make floaters. I just order from Brownells and...there! It's all we can get here in Canadaicon as they are just about the limit in across border trade before duty. All my jobs were simple ones not expensive specialties.

Thanks for the responses guys. No expense handbuilt stuff being considered. I just would like to bebarrel a couple of 03A3's that I have and would like to find or use the reamer that the consensus thinks is best. I had thought about just buying a pull through reamer and that way I could use it on an M-1 if I get to that point, but decided to get a standard reamer for the 03A3 projects. I will worry about M-1 stuff later if at all. I had read some negative customer reveiws on the Clymer reamers but you know how that stuff goes. I think they are one of the few that make a pull through so you are kind of stuck I guess that way.

    Thanks, Rick H.

A reamer is only as good as the user, look after it, keep the supply of lubricant up, remove chips and swarf regularly, clean it, oil it and don't abuse it.
