Dan, I imagine you've tried all sorts of cleaning, but I find that a toothbrush and whatever chemical you like works good with a blast of non-clorine brake cleaner to remove the residue. Personally, I wouldn't take mine off for fear of screwing up something, as scarce as these critters are.

Dan, I agree with ulflyer on the break cleaner. The nozzle will let you flush out the gunk. cost a couple of bucks but beats a headache. At least try it first. JMHO, have a good one.....Frank

The only way I know how to remove buttplate is total dissasembly. Have fun with the rivets. Mine had the leather replaced with hardware store rivets. yuk ! I found a box of brakeshoe rivets that look original but, now it has "new" rivets. Go with the brake cleaner! GK

Don't do it! Only way without disassembly is to pull the ends of the upper and lower apart
until the butt plate is free. This will bend the wires slightly. When you put it back together
there'll be some looseness. THEN... you have to get the tension spring back in and that's a bear! Leave it alone and follow the cleaning instructions offered here.
