    Enfield Bolt Heads

Just purchased a Savage No4 mk1 barreled receiver and need to figure out what number bolt head to use with it. I know Enfields have loose headspace but is there a way to figure out what bolt head I need to fire it safely without having to buy multiple bolt heads? Also, I know they headspace on the rim so are gauges really even necessary or could I Just use a cartridge case? Any help is a appreciated

    A new K98 owner

    Hello everyone,

Truly like this board, very informative with a great group of members sharing their knowledge, I'm glad to have found you as it's been fun so far and I would like to share what brought me here.

I've been collecting P.08's, Colt's and Smith revolvers for longer than I will admit, never been a long-gun guy, that is until recently after accidentally acquiring a K98icon Mauser and an Arisakaicon as part of a P.08 purchase.
I write accidentally because I bought them sight unseen from a Friend helping a Friend who had inherited them.
When I went to pick the pieces up from the FFL I paid no attention to the rifles, the Luger on the other hand was a nice piece, it would be several days before I had a chance to look over the long-guns. The Arisaka was as I imagined it to be, politely said, not my thing but the K98 was intriguing, this was a nice rifle and a 1934 Mauser banner which someone had done the "Sporterising" thing likely in the 1950's per the Lyman sights.
After taking it apart and cleaning it I found it was all matching including bolt and cut-down stock which was a D.R.P. but I think the most surprising thing was when I learned through this site what originally I perceived to be a hot salt re-blue turns out to be the original Mauser high-polish commercial finish on a military piece. I can't get over that.

Initially I planned to keep it as is but after learning the history my plans are to restore the piece to original or even sell it to a collector and build another for myself.

Couldn't have gotten to this point without this board and the knowledge of its members. So thank you all, Admins and members, I'm truly grateful.

    Gary
