This weeks purchase: M1917 sporter

I know you guys are thinking this is out of line but I just had to show you this one. I'm not a big sporter fan,in fact this is the first and only one I own. It's a M1917 Remington converted to a sporter and has got to be one of the best ones I've ever come across which is why I bought it. That and the fact it's been pretty slim pickens for anything around here lately so I had to buy something to scratch the itch.
The pics were taken rather quick and don't really show how good it looks in person. The bluing is incredible,deep,dark and glass smooth like a new Browning or Weatherby. The bolt is polished,the stock just right with a nice end cap,the sights are excellent and well done,there are no cut/grind or milling marks from the sight ear removal,no extra holes from scope mounts etc. Bore is brand new,headspace is perfect and the trigger is a perfect 2 stage. Paid $265 out the door.

Last year I was out bid at auction for a very nice example of a BSA Mod E sporter based on the P14. The condition was comparable to the one you've just got. I was a little miffed, to say the least. Well done on the rifle.

Once the damage is done, its done, and time to appreciate it for the nice sporter it is. I did a repair for a guy on a 1917 sporter recently but I'd like to trade him for the rifle. The stock was very nicely done,good lines and checkering patterns although worn and I'd like to keep and refinish it.

WOW, that is a very very nice sporter!!

I don't mind sporterized rifles as that is a valid part of the history of these rifles just as is their military time was.

Whoever did it sure had a professional job done on it, that bluing is gorgeous!! and the polishing is just enough to make a sweet finish but they didn't buff the proofs and other marks out. Very nice and for a great price too.

There is a world of difference between bubba's basement hacksaw chop job and a professional gunsmith's conversion.

Now it wouldn't be so bad if bubba picked on one of the common as muck rifles to butcher, but he always finds the rare ones to "sportyize" Example; the NZ. pattern carbine I found at the local pawn shop. Forend chopped (keep in mind this was a CARBINE to start with!!! Handguard thrown away, as well as the nosecap and clearing rod. Took several years to find someone to restore it.

That looks like a very nice rifle. Would it happen to have any markings on it that say, "Golden State Arms Corp" or, "Santa fe Model"? I am looking at one at the local shop and it is very similar to your pictures. It was sporterized by that company in the 50s or 60s. They are asking $350 for it.

I have a very nice Model of 1917 that I inherited from my brother-in-law. He bought the 1917 in the early 60s and every deer season he would bring it up to Missouri and let me use it, Every year it had someting added, or even taken away. By the mid-70s it was gorgeous, he put a Fajen stock on it and a very deep-blue. The rilfe shoots great, I have considered a speed-lock/cock-on open kit, but I've just never gotten around to it.

I still enjoy shjooting it.
