I don't understand the ammo hoarders

In past years (pre-Obama) I basically thinned my herd back to common U.S. and NATO military calibers with quite a bit of ammo for each. I loved collecting firearms from all over the planet but I moved a lot of stuff out, arms + ammo. It was all good stuff and I held out for what it was worth. More power to those folks who were happy to get it. We're not far enough along yet in the Obamanization of America to where I'll tell anybody, "Do what I did (cuz I did it)," but it is plausible to think the handwriting's on the wall for some kind of major upheaval domestically, perhaps globally. All you can do, really, is try to think tactically. What are my most effective weapons, how much stuff can I store & maintain, how much can I move out and by what means, if/when it comes to that? There's no "strategy", currently, of which I'm aware that I'd wanna sign onto. If I hadn't begun preparing a long time ago and I were scratching around now with my pants down, like so many are, I wouldn't run out and blow a bundle on ammo at current prices. What guarantee do you have that it'll save your life or your family's, or protect your property against trespassers, vagabonds, and marauders (or, for that matter, the forces of a police state)? No more guarantee than I have. I can say, though, I'm not alone, and thanks to many more folks who think independently of me but similarly, there will be ammo and there will be firearms throughout MOST of America as we know it. Those who haven't prepared, well, we'll call on them to contribute something else.

Anyone who has read "The Crash of '79" has grasped the concept that, if things really get bad, a handfull of cartridges will buy more food, water or fuel, than a handfull of gold coins.

I don't consider myself a hoarder altho I have a good supply of ammo. For years I picked empty brass at the range and reloaded it. As I enjoy reloading it kinda spiraled out of control and i don't really know how much I have. Now people pick their empties either for scrap or the reload.

I took advantage of the big military pulldown around 2003, got enough stuff to keep my Garands and M1A going for a good while, got a bunch of SMK's for my bolt rifles before the price increases. Even picked up 10K #34 primers [friend got 10K with me to spread out the Hazmat and shipping] for 15 bucks per thousand from Wideners. If I had known then what I know today, I would have gotten 100K. Spread the wealth around don't you know!

Well John,it would be odd if the picture was my own collection,but it is not.
If it was a picture of my safe it would look the same except it would be M1's,although I do have a few black rifles.
This picture came out of an email I received recently from a friend entitled "Gun Posters". There are some good ones in it but this one seemed to fit into this discussion.
My own take on ammo hoarding: I've got alot of HXP from the CMP but it has nothing to do with panic hoarding,I bought it because I use it and wanted to stock up in order to save money down the road. The ammo the CMP has will be gone soon,and then what? That's why I buy as much as I can when I can. As for the rest of the calibers I have,I don't hoard much,just enough for an ocassional trip to the range. I have a supply of reloading stock but nothing that would be considered hoarding. I don't reload much in advance because I don't know what I might want to shoot next. If I get the itch to excercise a particular firearm I'll load up some ammo for it and off I go. If keeping supplies on hand to be able to do this is considered hoarding by some folks,oh well,its a free country.

I made alternate arrangements too,I took out all the racks and put everything into gunsocks and stacked them in like cordwood,darn near doubled the capacity. Put in one row butt down,next row barrel down etc etc. Its a PITA to dig something out so most of what is in front are my main shooters. Its not as impressive looking anymore as all you see when its open is a sea of gray fabric,but I know whats in there. Even got both shelves piled tight with M1 carbines and handguns. 150 arms in one Sturdy safe and still have room for more.
