just a guess, but I'd say that the stock is bogus for starters. It looks like the wrong buttplate, the finish is off, and the WB marking would be correct for a WWII trench gun (implying a later serial number than what is on the gun). It also looks like the stock markings are bogus to me, the "W" looks to be too fat, and the "humps" on the B are off, but I'd need a closer look to tell. I can't make any commentary at all about 'between the war' serial numbers and martial markings...

Total humper.... cartouche not right and too far foward on stock.Heatsheild has been replaced with repro.And no WP proof on the top of the barrel.And people are bidding on it... I guess the humper market is alive and well.
There is also another model 12 trench on GB thats up to 3100. with a fake cartouche stock.

I'll also add that it's a riot gun. It still has the takedown lever on the mag tube. Also, the "W" marked bayo adaptors were not made until late 1943 or early 1944.

You would think that the ordnance bomb on the barrel would be the early type with large flame. Also that early serial number would just have the US on the receiver, and the handguard should be unmarked 6X29. I dont think they had any US marked guns with that early of a serial number anyway.

There are some commercial trench guns in that serial number range, but this shotgun looks like a put-together. Among other things, it has a riot gun takedown lever and a late bayonet adaptor/heat shield.

And did anyone else notice that the action slide bar has the early style marking? I think by the time this shotgun was made they were marked "Model 97", not "Model 1897".

I just love all the blurry pictures! I think if I was selling something like that, that was legit, I would make sure that the pictures were perfect.

Tom, you give this guy to much credit, for having a original heatshield. It does'nt flare down at the rear. There are four reinforceing dipples on the top, instead of two. Were are the rivets, most four rows you can see the some of rivet. The more you look the more you see, not right.
